Threadfin shad are a highly productive, open-water, schooling baitfish that feed primarily on plankton. Plankton abundance is necessary for threadfin shad to thrive. Consider your fishery a good candidate if you are on a fertilization program or if you have a natural plankton bloom. Super-clear and weedy fisheries do not make good candidates. Stocking rate is 500-1000 per acre. North Texas represents the northern geographic limit for threadfin shad due to winter-kill susceptibility.
